Question 1

Should I remove stop words from my slug?

Accepted Answer

It depends. Removing stop words (the, a, an, is, for…) makes slugs shorter and can look cleaner: "best-free-tools" vs "the-best-free-tools". However, sometimes stop words are semantically important. Test both and see what reads better.

Question 2

Hyphens or underscores in slugs?

Accepted Answer

Use hyphens. Google explicitly recommends hyphens over underscores in URLs. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator (so "my-page" = "my page"), but treats an underscore as a word joiner (so "my_page" = "mypage").
