Question 1

How does the diff work?

Accepted Answer

The tool uses a Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) algorithm — the same approach used by git diff — to find the longest sequence of common lines/characters and then marks everything else as added or removed.

Question 2

What is the difference between line and character mode?

Accepted Answer

Line mode compares text line by line, which is best for code, lists and prose. Character mode compares character by character, showing fine-grained differences within lines. Line mode supports up to 500 lines each; character mode up to 3000 characters each.

Question 3

Is my text sent to a server?

Accepted Answer

No. The entire diff is computed in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent anywhere.
